Synopsis:

Mary Oliver is a poet from Province Town, MA and writes mostly about nature.  Oliver was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1984) and the National Book Award (1992).  Her most recent collection is Evidence (2009).  The following is an excerpt from her poem In Blackwater Woods that was recently published in the New York Times.

To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.
