Dignity Therapy for people with advanced cancer

Synopsis:

This is an interesting article (PDF) about a study on the effectiveness of dignity therapy for people with advanced cancer who are referred to a hospital based palliative care team.  Patients participating in this study are given an extensive video recorded interview that focuses on what supports and what undermines their dignity as they near the end of life.  This study keys on some very tangible mental and spiritual issues that exist as one nears death.  If a patient does not proclaim to be religious or spiritual — addressing issues of meaning and worth through dignity therapy might be an effective way of relieving realized or unrealized spiritual and psychological suffering.
