Synopsis:
This article provides a clear and concise overview of acupuncture including definitions, research studies, history, concepts and how it can be used in pediatric pain management. Valuable research is discussed in the treatment of general pediatric pain, headaches, abdominal/pelvic pain, sickle cell pain, cystic fibrosis, cancer pain, myofascial/musculoskeletal pain, and acute pain. Much of the research supports the efficacy of acupuncture in the aforementioned treatments but also recognizes the urgent need for further high quality randomized controlled trials on the use of acupuncture in the pediatric population.
